BUIES CREEK, N.C. - New Head Coach Dustin Fonder has announced Campbell's 2015 men's soccer fall slate, which includes four regular season matchups against sides which reached the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
The Camels will open the season with a pair of exhibition matches against ACC opponents, squaring off against NC State at the Eakes Athletics Complex at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, before traveling to Clemson for a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Thursday, August 20. Campbell has faced the Wolfpack 34 times in the regular season, the second-most among all opponents in school history, but has met the Tigers just three times, with the last meeting in 1998.
Campbell will open the regular season on the road for the second straight season, making the in-state trip to Davidson on Friday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m. The Camels fell in a hard-fought 3-1 decision against the Wildcats in Buies Creek last season as rising junior Tunji Osifeso found the back of the net early in the second half.
Following the season opener, the Camels will compete in a pair of tournaments, first traveling to Wilmington to take on Elon (Sept. 4) and UNCW (Sept. 6) in the Courtyard Wilmington-Wrightsville Beach Classic. Campbell has played the two squads a combined 68 times in the regular season, posting a 35-30-3 record in those matchups. The tournament will be Campbell's first trip to Wilmington since a 1-1 draw on Sept. 24, 2013, and the Seahawks reached the Round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
One week later, Campbell will head west to Nashville, Tenn., for dates against former Atlantic Sun foes Lipscomb (Sept. 11) and Belmont (Sept. 13) in the Belmont Invitational. The Camels sport winning records all-time against both sides, holding a 5-3-1 mark against Lipscomb and a 9-2-0 record over Belmont. The last time Campbell faced either side came in 2010, the Camels' final season in the Atlantic Sun.
Campbell's regular season home opener will come nearly a full month into the season as Jacksonville travels north on Sept. 18, followed by a Sunday matinee against Stetson on Sept. 20. The Camels compiled a 1-1 record against the two sides in 2014, defeating Stetson 3-1 but falling 1-0 against Jacksonville.
The Camels will open Big South play at home on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7:00 p.m. in a clash with Longwood, following up with a road trip to 2014 Big South Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant Coastal Carolina on Oct. 4 and a home date with 2014 regular season champion Radford on Oct. 10.
The remainder of Campbell's Big South schedule will feature home contests against Gardner-Webb (Oct. 17) and Liberty (Nov. 4) and road trips to Presbyterian (Oct. 24), Winthrop (Oct. 28), High Point (Oct. 31) and UNC Asheville (Nov. 7).
Rounding out the non-conference schedule are two marquee home matchups against Wake Forest (Oct. 13) and North Carolina (Oct. 20), with both slated for 7:00 p.m. starts. Both opponents reached the 2014 NCAA Tournament, with North Carolina reached the quarterfinals and Wake Forest falling to eventual College Cup participant UMBC in the opening round. The Camels will be seeking their first win against an ACC opponent since a 3-0 win over Virginia Tech on Oct. 2, 2012.
Campbell will embark on its first campaign under new coach Dustin Fonder in 2015. Hired on June 9, Fonder was previously the head coach at High Point for the last eight seasons, earning a pair of Big South Coach of the Year awards while leading the Panthers to a 73-49-17 (.586) overall record and the 2010 Big South regular season championship during his tenure.
